Tip! Did you know you qualify for a free bus pass if you have certain MH problems?? I have had a free bus pass since I came back to England four years ago. All you need is a Doctor's note. My last issue was for five years on a BPD 2 Doctor note. When I came back to England I was recovering from two foot surgeries in California, major ones. I had three more in England. So I walked (with a crutch) into Plymouth City Council's main reception A nice Lady said have you come for your disability bus pass, em, please tell me more nice Lady..... I was directed to another Lady who asked what my disability was and I told her about my foot and ankle. She said bring a Doctor's note in or your surgeon so I brought a note in from my surgeon in California and was issued a bus pass right away. Two years later it expired and I got a letter from my Doctor and Psychiatrist which led to me getting a seven year buss pass. Believe me if you aren't working and can get on a bus, travel miles, wander around wherever and get back on a bus home it is pretty handy to have.... David

I didn't know that. Do you know what MH problems are eligible?

I'm not 100% sure but Bipolar Disorder for sure. The one thing to be careful of is getting barred from driving because of MH problems. I have a friend in Sheffield that had is license refused on renewal.
Cars are way too expensive here and my bus pass has certainly helped us save ££££s

You can't get a bus pass unless you qualify for DLA level 2 or higher mobility. If you only get DLA care then you aren't eligible. I've tried and enquired with a doctors note and I wasn't eligible. I have BD and receive Lower Rate Care DLA.

You can't get a bus pass unless you qualify for DLA level 2 or higher mobility. If you only get DLA care then you aren't eligible. I've tried and enquired with a doctors note and I wasn't eligible. I have BD and receive Lower Rate Care DLA. Awh, that's a shame. From my experience you have to be on your death bed to be eligible for any sort of DLA

It's just a case of being able to fill the forms in well, and obviously being ill. If you get the slightest bit out on the forms they nail you.

Abby - Yes you can - maybe.... I had a tweet from a Lady in London and she said some councils don't allow them but a lot do. She lives in London and has a pass for certain areas on the underground. copylondon Not quite right. In Plymouth our City Council do give out bus passes to the disabled. I couldn't believe it when the Lady at the council reception gave me a bus pass with only a Doctor's note -- no DLA needed. When I got the bus pass I was appealing a DLA decision and still got my bus pass which runs out in 2017. DLA wasn't mentioned just the Doctor's note which I gave the Lady. She took my photo filled out a basic form and waited three days 'til my bus pass was mailed. Probably the easiest bit of officialdom I've been through ! The DLA forms are a pain in the arse and I spent days doing it all properly - TIP!!!! Keep records of everything NOW... If you don't it will make it tough with DLA I won at a tribunal so it's always worth pursuing. The bit that swayed the tribunal for me was the fact that with my BD I sometimes get depersonalization and cut my self too often. I hope I've helped there.. David

She said hers was restricted but hey! it's free David

I agree on DLA but if you are persistent it is possible. David

If in Plymouth these are the guidelines and are pretty much verbatim across the rest of the UK:
"You are eligible for a concessionary bus pass if you are a Plymouth resident of pensionable age and over or a disabled person who:
is blind or partially sighted is profoundly or severely deaf is without speech has a disability, or has suffered an injury that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on your ability to walk does not have arms or has long-term loss of the use of both arms has a learning disability is unfit to drive for medical reasons is registered as disabled ex-service personnel"
So you could theoretically get a buss pass without being on DLA but if you have any of the above then you will likely be on DLA. Although some of the meds taken by people with mental health conditions do consequently disqualify them from driving whilst they might not be in receipt of DLA and therefore they would be eligible.

Thanks for that copylondon
Whatever the process was fast, comfortable and so very easy.
I must reiterate I was not on DLA at the time.
I would try your local authority it is a massive money saver

I have just found the Tweet from a Bipolar Lady in London and here's what she has...
bus, train and tram, but only in London zones 1-6.
I don't know what zones they cover but anything in LDN free is a bonus.
