Tonight sees Channel 4 air Psychopath Night. Here's the info about it from their website...
"Psychopaths are a ruthless breed who lie, manipulate and sometimes murder, with no hint of conscience of remorse. One per cent of the population are classified as psychopathic. There may be one in your office. There could be one on your street. They are all around us, often in positions of power.
Psychopath Night unravels the mystery of this minority, with the help of leading experts. The programme goes inside the minds of psychopaths, finds out how to spot a psychopath, and meets real psychopathic killers.
The programme also gets to know some familiar faces who are high on the psychopathic scale, including a star of the England football team.
There's also a countdown of the Top 10 movie psychopaths, as selected by experts, including a real-life Clarice Starling who uses Hollywood movies to teach her FBI trainees about psychopaths and how to handle them.
Psychopath Night reveals everything you ever wanted to know about psychopaths, and perhaps a few things you didn't."
Not QUITE sure how I feel about how this is written, but will see how it pans out tonight.
Will anyone else be watching?

I'm so sorry - just realised Lucy did a post about this programme too and I didn't realise - sorry Lucy! xx
Anyway, what did we think?
In my PERSONAL opinion, I actually found it fascinating. Yes, there was dramatisation, but I think that was to be expected from the blurb they wrote on their website. I found the interview with the first guy who had been convicted of murder just really interesting. I'm not quite sure why, but it got me how he never even blinked, and how fascinated he was with everything. Very knowledgeable man, there's no debate about that!
I think the way they tried to say how 20-25 people on a 2,000 person cruise ship were psychopaths was a bit of a generalisation. It seems the term "psychopath" is being thrown around a little too liberally in some cases, particularly in people who tend to be antisocial or violent without showing any remorse.
What did we think then?

I have to say i thought it was done really really well! Yes there was dramatisation like Kim's said, and the typical horror style sound track it seemed to be sporting through out annoyed me a bit. But on the whole I actually found it to be quite myth/stigma busting!
I have to disagree that the term psychopath is over used, in my personal opinion anyway, because what struck me most about the programme was it was really driving home the facts about psychopathy being a spectrum. And yes, at the most extreme end of the spectrum there can be violence, and it can be scary, but there's also traits of psychopathy that are found people who have never shown any violence, and that they can in some cases be quite positive traits to have! So using the term psychopath is simply describing what it is, whether you have a couple of traits, or are on the extreme - I think something's only thrown around if it's being used to describe something incorrectly, like "oh I'm so depressed I missed the bus". If it's being used to describe traits on a scale then I have no problem with it.
Really really impressed with the programme!

I completely take back all my pre-judgments about the programme itself! Shouldn't have assumed what it was going to be like from the description!

Seems like the programme itself was actually pretty good, they just could have worded the promotion of it a bit better.
