These are some facts from Mr Vikram Patel, Co-Director of the centre of Global Mental Health. - Disability Adjusted Life Year (Daly) shows that Mental Illness is amongst the leading causes of disability around the world.
- Depression is the 3rd leading cause of disability around the world.
- If you put Mental Illnesses together, they account for a whopping 15% of the total Global Burden of Disease.
- World Health Organisation (WHO) have stated that between 4 and 5 hundred million people living in the world are effected by Mental Illness.
From Autism to Anxiety and Depression to Psychosis right up to Dementia are such illnesses that fall under Mental Illnesses. Take a moment and think, do you know atleast ONE person who Mental Illness effects. I bet you can name atleast ONE. - A vast Majority of the individuals who are effected by Mental Illness, do not receive the care they need.
- Robust evidence shows that a range of interventions can make a vast difference, medicines, psychological intervention and social intervention are amongst the interventions that can make a vast difference.
- Roughly 50% of people in the countries of America and Europe are not receiving these interventions.
- Less advanced countries such as India or Mexico reach 90%
If you speak to someone effected by Mental Illness, you will probably hear stories such as suffering, shame and or discrimination in nearly every sector of their lives. But remember this. You are NOT alone. And these facts and this amazing family on this forum proves it. Even the best, fall down sometimes.
