Hi everyone,
I hope you are all well! Sorry if I've been a bit distant, I'm running on no internet (and trying/failing to use BT Openzone).
As many of you know, it's our sponsored talk on Friday and Saturday - EEK - and we're just putting together the schedule to be announced tomorrow.
Throughout the talk we are going to be reading out some personal stories, from our members, about their mental health and why it's important that people raise awareness and also receive support. Think of it a bit like the really incredible bits in Children in Need where you see the real stories of why these people need awareness/support.
Each of our volunteers will hopefully get to read out at least one, but we do need those stories! I've set out a kind of format below, to make sure that each of our stories has a running theme. If you COULD get these to us by Friday then that would be incredible. Also, if you've already written us a blog post and would like to edit that to be read out (in the same format) then do let me know and we can work on that instead.
So, the format is as follows:
Name (you can be anonymous or use a pen name if you like), Age and Location.
What is your mental health disorder(s)?
How is your day to day life impacted by these disorders?
What kind of stigma have you faced? Have you told people? What were their reactions?
Why is mental health awareness so important to you?
What about support? Have you received any? Was it any good? Are you still on a waiting list? Any negative experiences with trying to get support?
Why is getting support so important? How do you feel about peer to peer support (such as forums/groups) and why is it/isn't it important?
Why Minds Like Ours? Why are you a member? Why do you volunteer your time or your pennies to help us out (and you ALL do, even posting on the forum helps more than you know)? Why is it important that organisations such as MiLO exist? Have we genuinely helped you and if so, how?
You don't need to cover every single one of these points, think of this as a loose guide for you to work from. They can be as long or as short as you like and don't worry about spelling or grammar. The more honest and open the better, although do try and avoid things that could be TOO triggering such as details about SH or ED numbers.
Please, please help us by sharing your stories and raising awareness.
Thank you, lots of love xxx
