Does anyone have any good techniques for identifying triggers or coping in general?

Identifying triggers I find hard, but im always told to write down what im feeling/doing because of the trigger (eg self harm or panic attack) and what's happens before and apparently a pattern should emerge. Coping in general depends on what your struggling with I think. Distractions are probably best for self harm, such as massaging the area, drawing on yourself in red, throwing and catching a ball, hitting something. With anxiety personally id say breathing techniques an having someone with you who can help you stay calm enough helps. With depression or mood cycles im not sure, sorry, I just try and remind myself it won't last forever (I have bpd so one emotion doesn't last particularly long, but it is crazily intense). Hope that helps somehow!

I found this PDF a while back,I think it has some brilliant suggestions to distract from SH,it has several category's which I think is helpful because you may already have some idea of which types of distractions may help. Distractions (1).pdf (839.03 KB) My previous post which I posted this PDF in is mindslikeours.boards.net/thread/584/sitesI also posted a couple of other things in that which may be helpful but I am not too sure, some of the stuff may be triggering though so please be weary. In terms of general coping I guess keeping busy is generally the best thing you can do whether it is doing housework or something fun and creative like writing poems.People often say keeping active and eating healthily can help, which I guess is understandable.Hope this helps in some way =]

missgomi says "Its just a few things that have helped me. 1) try to get out of bed within half an hour of waking up, not always possible i know, but getting some kind of routine has really helped, i try to set my alarm for the same time each day. 2. Do something that makes you happy each day, even as simple as watching your fave programme, listening to a favourite band, getting hair, nails done etc. 3. I've started writing a proper diary, getting thoughts out or by talking to someone is always good Finding something to occupy your time, like something creative, i like baking and making scrapbooks, anything that gives you a distraction. Also headspace, i cant remember the website, but its like ten mins of meditation Each day, most of all though, dont beat yourself up if you have a duvet day, and remember that MiLO are here for you!"
