We all know how hard it is to break the cycle of anxiety, stop a panic attack or banish negative thoughts. It is far easier to feel anger and fear than to feel comfort and safety. BUT - there is a reason for this - as human beings, we evolved with a very highly developed THREAT SYSTEM. It is important to remember that our threat system responses - like anger, sadness or fear - are biologically based responses that evolved to help us protect ourselves. These emotions are not a sign that something is wrong with us - or a symptom of personal weakness. We did not chose whether or not to feel them - they are just there! The fact that we feel these defensive threat emotions is not our fault, but because they can negatively impact our lives, we just have to find useful ways of working with them. We just have to train our brains to react differently. Not a simple task I know - but just knowing that it's not your fault, it's not something you've created and that these are normal, human functions can be a help, and a step to acceptance. And once you've accepted, you're on the road to recovery!
