Hi everyone.
In the style of the Film Club, I came up with the idea of the MLO Book Club. I was reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which is a fictional Young Adult novel which deals with the protagonists' struggles to deal with real life and his unspecified mental health problems, when something occurred to me. Fiction which deals with mental health issues has been a GREAT comfort to me in all my years of mental health problems. I love reading so much. And I wanted to share that comfort with other members.
SO. Who's interested?
What'll be involved is choosing a book to read every month, and then discussing it with other members of the Book Club. After discussion on the Facebook group, I decided that we will alternate between reading a MH-related fiction book one month, and reading a general fiction book the next month, to give us a break from potentially heavy discussions. Which one we start with is up to you. If for any reason you want to back out or can't afford the book that month, that's fine, just let me know. I may be able to find you a way of getting a copy of the book. (Kindle copies from Amazon, which you can read on your PC, of books tend to be a LOT cheaper, and sometimes free if it's considered a "classic", such as Jane Eyre).
All I ask is that everyone involved suggests one book to read before Sunday night at 7pm, and then I will hold a poll until Wednesday next week to decide. Then we'll allow you some time to get a hold of the book and read it. It'll be at least a month to do both, although I'm not sure of the exact times yet. Feel free to suggest a general fiction book or a MH-related one. If a general one gets picked this month, for example, we'll be reading a mental health-related novel next.
Please comment if you're interested or have any questions.
Thanks,
Laura
