Today is the day I finally see a psychiatrist for a diagnosis. I'm very nervous and scared. What will happen at the meeting? Will I get help? How did you feel about getting a diagnosis? How do I prepare for it? I feel a little lost

Please try not to worry there is nothing to fear from seeing a psychiatrist its just like seeing a G.P but they have a better understanding of mental health problems. You will sit in a chair and they will ask questions about how you feel, Just try to relax and be as honest and open about how you feel, remember they are in the best position to help you. Oh and contrary to what you see on TV, I've ever once had to lay down on a couch. No preparation needed, unless you find it easier to write down that you might want to discuss apart from that just go with the flow.
Good luck

I think an important thing to remember is that all they are doing is giving a name to what you already have. Nothing will change after hearing the diagnosis. You will still have / not have what you do / don't have. Of course, once they give a name to whatever it is you have, then they can figure out the best method of helping you out. No matter what happens, things will be okay

Thank you. No diagnosis was reached as need more assessments. We are looking at possibility of cyclothymia. Was given some anti psychotic medication to try, and so far seems ok. Knocks me out at night and very drowsy in the morning. Only been two days so don't know much yet obviously. All I can say is that neither up nor down at mo which is good but strange in itself.

The day I got my diagnosis I was very sad and wished I had never gone to see a doctor. I was scared. But ultimately, it only made things better I found out I wasn't just imagining things and that "pulling myself together" wasn't an option. I think what Jam said is so very true: It won't change anything about you, other than, you can start getting better. Good luck
