Okay I am very bad at decision making, and I mean absolutely terrible so thought I would post here and see what suggestions are made!
I want to study Psychology at the uni near me. It's my lifelong ambition and I'm so determined to do it. However... I never got any Level 3 qualifications as I had to leave college due to my mental health. I'm now 22, so I would need to do an Access to Higher Education course to get in.
The benefit is that if I attend college, I won't pay course fees because of my age and because of it being my first Level 3 qualification.
However, I've recently been offered a job at a mental health charity, something that I would love. It's 28 hours per week though so I won't be able to attend college for a full time course!
I'm also getting married this November so I need some form of income, even if it's just part time money.
I can't decide what to do - if I leave college another year, I'm a lot closer to having to pay fees and I don't know if I should take the risk in case the government changes anything. It also means another year later to going to uni, and as I'll be married, I do want children at some point so not sure how long I want to leave it.
However if I DO go to college, I'd be turning down this awesome job. But this job isn't forever - they have initial funding for a year but they have no idea if it will get any longer due to it being the first project of its kind.
They have an open day at the college tomorrow which I'll need to go to to try get a space.
What shall I do?!

We really cannot tell you what to do. This has to be your decision. Life is full of compromise, by doing one thing you may have to give up another. Talk to your fiancé and discuss things with him.

I'm a firm believer in work over college, especially at the moment when job spaces are low and people are being chosen for their experience and not their qualifications. However it's slightly different with the subject you want to do and I understand that.
It may be worth talking to Mind and explaining your dilemma to them. This job you got is an incredible achievement and one I'm sure many people have coveted; you're very lucky and talented to have got it. It would be a shame to throw it away without at least explaining your dilemma to them.
The other thing to consider is an Open University course. There are ways of getting funding for this, whilst you're still making money at Mind. The good thing is you will be able to work the 28 hours and do your course work when you have spare time, making it your average 40 hours working week. There are also colleges which offer this kind of learning environment, including night classes, to help those who are working.
It doesn't have to be black or white, work or college, there are ways around it. The best thing you can do is communicate with the college and employer, as then you'll know what can be done to help from their end.
Good luck!

Thanks Steve and Bex, both fair comments. Sometimes it just helps to hear an "outsiders" opinion if that makes sense!
I've got the option of doing an Access course online which is something I'm thinking about, but there's no funding available so it's just whether I can afford it or not. I would still love to go to uni because I want that hands on experience sort of thing, and the help with things like future job applications and the chance to work with people.
Thanks for your advice. :-) x
