Hi All,
so I've had an idea for getting some interesting discussions going (it could also impact some of our social media work). There are SO many films out there on the topic of mental health it's unreal; some that are incredibly poignant and portray living with a disorder in a very real and dignified way..... And some not so much. So, I was thinking why not have a monthly film club where we can discuss how mental health is portrayed in the media, in terms of mental health awareness, all some people have to go off is what they see on the TV and in films, so it's super important that it's all portrayed in the right way! We can pick a film at the start of each month (I've said monthly as I thought this was reasonable in terms of the time people have plus possible costs involved in accessing the films) have say two weeks to watch it, and two weeks to discuss it. It's a bit of fun for us all, plus a way to get some interesting discussions and potentially more awareness going...... What do people think?

Awesome! suggestions for films welcome! What I might do is gather a list together of suggestions plus whatever else I can find, and pull one out of a hat each month, how does that sound? Il announce the first one on 1st September, so we can start it right at the start of the new month and it gives a few more people the chance to view this thread and get involved so glad you like the idea!

Ah I didn't see that post before Bex sorry! I think schizophrenia's the worst for inaccurate portrayal in films, it's obvious the majority don't do their research when it comes to psychotic disorders and they often just slap the name schizophrenia on anything they feel like! Il put the ones you mentioned on the list, would anybody else like to submit any requests?

Hi Mia, I'd like to submit a few if that's okay?
First request is Side Effects - I've not actually seen it, but it's something I really want to see soon lol! Other films: Girl Interrupted, Silver Linings Playbook, Little Miss Sunshine, Secret Window

It's not a film, but I think that comedy TV programmes in general are terrible when it comes to portraying mental health, as they show lots of different disorders in inaccurate and often offensive ways (even when they mean well) and then actually encourage people to laugh at them!

Awesome thanks Kim I'll add them to the list. It doesn't always have to be a film, it can be a TV show or documentary. Basically anything anybody suggests il pop into a "hat" and pick one totally at random each month

I would love to have some suggestions for films worth watching. A Beautiful Mind is personally my favourite, I think it's inspiring and really helped my girlfriend understand a bit more about what I go through.
