Hi, does anybody have any experience of Dialetical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) which I've read is one intervention for Borderline Personality Disorder?

I've only had one session so far and it was incredibly helpful.I have BPD and anxious and avoidance personality disorder. We looked at anger and what emotional pathways might lead us to anger from a particular situation and talked about letting it be anger but not having to act on it. For anger it didn't really relate for me, my major difficulties are fear or extreme self hatred as feelings, but I know that when something happens it isn't the first emotion I feel, and if I could accept the first emotion then it may not escalate and end me up in hospital. It was helpful but I defo need to do more for it to really work! Hope that helps!

Thanks ellief - I was really eager to find out someone's experience of it- it sounds like something that would really help me. Had you tried CBT before and if so, how did it differ? I've just read on Mind it is available on NHS... What was the waiting list like for you? Thanks again lovely X

Waiting lists depend on the area. For instance my old authority didnt offer it at all but the one I am in now does. For BPD I have heard nothing but great things where DBT is talked about though

I have BPD. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy changed my life - it worked for me on a level that no other therapy/treatment had even touched. That's just my personal experience of it, but I believe it works very well for people with BPD.

I've never had CBT but have taught it to 10 year olds, I found it difficult because I don't always feel what I think I do or I can't identify it. I didn't have to wait because I was on a psych ward where it was done as group therapy for those with BPD (there were only two of us!) and now I'm waiting to see my care coordinator to see what happens next! Sorry that's not an overly helpful answer, but I really recommend DBT!

Thanks for your honesty-it helps me hearing from someone who has actually had it before. I really hope your care coordinator can arrange for you to have more sessions and that you can build up DBT skills. Appreciate your thoughts on CBT too. The more I hear about DBT, the more I'm liking it X
