I've been really struggling with sleeping the past couple of weeks. Well, I've struggled with it on and off for years, but the past few weeks have be horrible. Anyone know of/use any ways to help them get to sleep?

Hi Ellie, sorry you're finding it difficult to sleep, I can empathise. It makes everything seem a little more difficult when you've not had sleep! So basic things you could try are listening to music, something relaxing, have you heard of Sigur Ros? They help me drift off sometimes. You could also try a bath, with lots of bubbles! Hot milk is meant to work as well, or something like Horlicks. Lavender also works well, if you have a plant, put a few sprigs in your pillow case or you can buy essential oils you could drop on to a tissue and pop in pillow case again. More long term, have you ever tried Mindfulness? There's lots of stuff on the internet. Try Headspace. You can also find a loads of guided videos for it on YouTube. If worst does come to worst, go speak to your GP who may be able to prescribe you something. I'm not sure how old you are, but you can buy herbal sleeping pills over the counter, which I've had before and they've done the trick. You could also try Rescue Remedy as well. They have little herbal sleeping drops that melt on your tongue. :-) xx

It might also be a good idea to alter your surroundings slightly when you're trying to get to sleep; for example, if your room is very quiet then you could add some background noise like a fan or a ticking clock, or if there's too much noise you could try using earplugs.

I'm so sorry Ellie, it was a bit insincere for me to suggest that, considering. x
Maybe try and give the Rescue Remedy a go? That's just all herbal. :-) x

Hey Ellie, I was also going to suggest Mindfulness. I guess it kind of depends what your issue is when you try to sleep - I always find that I either worry about things or am thinking of all the things I need to do, is that your issue? I find it helps to keep a notepad by my bed and I make a to do list just before I go to sleep (could also use your phone), that way I don't need to worry that I will forget anything.
If it's worrying about things that are coming up the next day or whenever, then it might help to journal - just write down everything that's bothering you, let it all flow out, which hopefully frees your mind up to relax for sleep. Then when you're lying in bed, the more you think about how much you need to sleep, the more you are thinking and the more anxious and awake you get - so stop focusing on sleep! Instead focus on your breathing. When your thoughts drift away, don't fight it just gently bring them back to focusing on breathing again once you realise.
Hope this helps! Let us know!
