Hi, I'm a 20 year old anorexic, I have been trying to recover, but it is seemingly impossible for me to put weight on beyond 123 pounds (should be 144), this is really affecting my self-esteem and making being 'healthy' (in other's eyes) seem like an impossible goal. I've tried almost everything to gain, 'eating more' just doesn't work, nor do nutritional supplement drinks help much, I went to the doctor and asked about weight gain, but they just shoved me sideways into the mental health services, I moved 100 miles to escape from that eating disorder service referral (thank you uni ) and have no desire to repeat that experience. Is there ANY way I can get the required amount of food etc into me? (Don't bother saying 'eat more', been there, done that, it doesn't work.) Thank you

I think that it really depends on what it is you're eating. Which food groups would you say you eat most?

Carbohydrate, the drinks provide vitamin and minerals etc, I'm sure there's some protein in there somewhere. Please do not suggest 'eat more' because that's what I have been doing for the past year 'just eat more' doesn't work. Maybe my stomach has stopped accepting food? Cos whenever I ate before about a year ago, my weight shot up, although it still never went above 123. I recently managed to get my weight to 124.5 pounds, which was a real achievement for me, but it took me well over a year to get there. I'm not looking forward to the prospect of trying to get to 144 if gaining a pound and a half took me a year... should be done in about another 20 odd years or so

I think you ought to try eating more protein, as well as dairy products like milk, cheese, yoghurt etc. The only healthy way to gain weight is to maintain a balanced diet, and also to make sure that you're not exercising excessively.

I highly doubt eating more, of anything would help. I've been eating lots, hasn't made the slightest bit of difference Is there any other way of gaining, other than the 'just eat more' approach?

Muscle weighs more than fat, so I guess you could try muscle strengthening exercises that won't make you lose weight?

Thank you Nick I am too weak to do exercise. I walked a few miles yesterday and kept losing my balance and walking into things, could hardly hold my eyes open and couldn't walk straight.

the minnie maud recovery programme helps a lot of people, it is for people underweight and you must eat between 3000-3500 calories every day, restrict yor exercise to the bare minimum, your not aloud to weigh yourself, and it sort out your body to a healthy weight and when i sway eat 3000-3500 calories i do not mean spend your entire day eating junk food and chocolate but still incorporate healthy things into your meal, a lot of my friends on recovery on other sites and forums are doing this and they find they are improving vastly, www.youreatopia.com/blog/2013/3/31/minniemaud-guidelines-for-recovery-from-a-restrictive-eating.html is the link for some information to it, hope this helps!
