So, this is a post for those who aren't away of the different triggers that can spiral depression.
Surprising potential cause are illnesses:
Those with long term illnesses such as cancer are far more likely to develop depression.
Also, any significant blow to the head can trigger depression, and major mood swings, throwing emotions out of control. Underactive thyroids, as well as small damage to the pituitary gland in the brain can lead to depression.
Personality
So, your personality is something that is developed during the early stages of your life. However, it can determine whether you're more likely to develop depression. Those with traits including low self esteem are at a higher risk of developing depression. Early experiences during your life can alter your persoablity and therefore can alter your risk of depression.
Genes
So, you inherit your genes from your parents. It's proven that if there is a family history of depression, you're also at a higher risk of developing it.
Cut off from community
Once someone is cut off from family and friends for a period of time, they are at higher risk also. Once depression develops, it can lead to feeling more and more isolated and therefore more and more depressed: visciius circle of depression!
Alcohol
Alcohol is a strong depressant. Many people every year turn to the bottle to relieve themselves of whatever problems/emotions/situations they're facing. However, this can worsen desperation and therefore could lead to someone drinking more and more alcohol and worsening their problem. Yet another vicious trap!
Illegal drugs
Many illegal drugs can lead to depression. Many teens every year like to try and test new things. One of these being drugs, and more specifically cannabis. However, despite cannabis leaving someone feeling relaxed, there are studies to show that it can also cause depression.
Legal drugs
It's surprising the amount of prescription drugs that can also cause depression. This is a lesson I learnt the hard way. My depression developed after taking a course of medication. I can't remember what it was, but both I and my parents had to sign something to agree to my terms and condition whilst taking it so I suppose it must have been something high risk. This is why it's important to ALWAYS read the side effects before taking something to be aware and report to your doctor as soon as something like depression starts developing
