I've seen my GP for a while, and had a psychiatric assessment, but I still don't know. I thought it was health anxiety, but now that seems to just be one part of it, and not the root. When I start my proper treatment next month I'll need to make a point of asking! It flares up during stressful periods. I was first diagnosed and given citalopram in 2010, and then it went away and didn't really come back until this May when I was taken off the meds. I'm now back on them but still struggling a bit because it was quite an extreme bout of anxiety over a few months! x

sounds like general anxiety (not that I am trying to diagnose you) mine was a lot like that I just couldn't put my finger on it then I thought I had a heart problem but it was all checked out and was just a symptom of panic (racing heart, skipped beats, irregular beats and feeling like I can't catch my breathe or that I will pass out) I kind of felt lost because I had no real reason for it to happen and it felt like I could not over come it if I didn't know a cause for it! But after a few sessions of CBT I realised I can over come it by dealing with the here and now, of course I get certain triggers but I don't think I will ever find the real cause because it could be many things! I had a severe bout of anxiety and panic too and it is a real shock to the system and you just can't get a grip of things but it does get better you just got to give yourself time to heal and lots of TLC I chose not to take any medication, I understood that it would take longer but I feared going on them just in case I didn't like the side affects or that they would mess with my heart rate (I am always very aware of my heart )all in all though things are getting a lot better and CBT really helped me xx

Hey Lauren! Welcome to MLO:) lots of us seem to be at uni, I'm just about to start 2nd year. I had lots of trouble getting solid diagnosis too, my condition changed a lot. I have a social anxiety disorder which flares up at different points, especially when I'm stressed (curse of perfectionism.) Carrie: Lay in bed crying this morning for about an hour convinced I was having a heart attack because it was skipping and pounding. Asked to be put on a 24hr monitor a few weeks ago but the doctors wouldn't because they've never found anything wrong. I'm worried it's a heart problem that'll get ignored because of my mh illnesses. xxx

Hi Esther, I must admit it took a while before any GP at my surgery would refer me to cardiology because every time I had a heart episode it would stop by the time I got to the doctors...typical! It was only by chance that I was having episode whilst being checked by my GP and he decided to send me to be monitored, I was sent to the hospital and put on a 48 hour tape and I was having episodes all over the 48 hours but they told me everything was fine and that I would live a long and happy life. They did tell me that there are things that can help like lifestyle changes and I must admit it has helped a lot, I stopped drinking alcohol (I know that sounds boring but it really did help) I try to eat no food with MSG in and I try to eat as healthy as I can. Getting a good nights sleep is helpful although I know this is hard with anxiety sometimes and I always stay hydrated. I know it can be really scary I have honestly thought I was going to die sometimes but its just something I have learned to deal with now. Don't get me wrong persevere with your GP if they can send you it will put your mind at ease either way because if it is stress and it's safe you can learn coping techniques and if there if something wrong (fingers crossed there's not) it will be dealt with in the best way by the doctors. Hope this helps. Take care x

Hey Esther!
To both Carrie and Esther - oh my goodness, yes, I have such terrible phobias about my heart. It seems to be the way that when people have anxiety or panic attacks they fixate on one symptom - one of my class mates who has anxiety said she always felt like she was breathless. I don't have OCD but when I get anxious or uncomfortable I often don't even notice that I'm checking my pulse. And when I'm anxious I can always feel my pulse, in my fingers particularly. I do worry the same, that there may be something undetected that is overlooked because of the anxiety xx

I always used to do that...any sign of anxiety and I would have my fingers firmly on my pulse!! I don't do it as much any more well hardly at all really I found it got me more and more anxious. I do feel my pulse around my body too, mainly my chest but if it's really bad I feel it in my throat and just the tip of my nose...random! in a strange way it's amazing how anxiety has the power to do all these strange things to our bodies but whats even more amazing I suppose is how we can over power it when it arises...with a lot of practice x
