Hi guys, In this thread we will be discussing the many different books which you can read to help you cope with your mental health condition. I originally come from Cardiff and was one of the first PCTs which had a "Book Prescription Scheme". It was created to get service users to try and use self help books as part of their recovery and to try and not be too reliant on medication. This is all well and good but the problem I find found with MY use of self help books is that when I really needed the advice I couldn't really take it in. And when I could take it in, I didn't need it. The main book I was suggested is "Overcoming Depression" by Paul Gilbert. This is book is very well known from a renowned UK Doctor specialising in Adult Mental Health. It uses Cognitive Behavioural Techniques in its teachings and I believe it is a must have for anyone currently having CBT as a treatment for their Depression. Full details can be found by clicking here. Have you used this or other books to complement your treatment? Do you have any recommendations? Lets start this conversation now.

I have to admit, I've never actually tried self help books.... I'm always a bit funny about taking advice from someone in a book, because I sometimes feel as though it can be quite condescending. Although, as I've never read any of them I'm probably completely wrong. I tend to prefer disappearing into a fiction novel, especially 'other worlds'.
I'd be interested to see if anyone else has read a self help book though?

Fantastic thread Steve! :-)
After I did filming in the Lake District for Failed by the NHS we got recommended these books for Mindfulness by the teacher we had:
Books (all available on Amazon.co.uk):
Get Some Headspace - Andy Puddicombe
Mindfulness: Finding Peace in a Frantic World - Mark Williams and Danny Penman
The Mindful Way through Depression - Mark Williams, John Teasdale, Zindel Seagal, Jon Kabat-Zinn (I was advised NOT to read this if you're feeling particularly depressed as it's very heavy going)
Wherever You Go, There You Are - Jon Kabat-Zinn

Would this work for anyone with bipolar disorder or borderline personality disorder?

I meant mindfulness. However anything that is if help would be greatly appreciated. I have tried reading as much as I can on the subjects to help me understand.

I find the Overcoming Series to be pretty good as they are 1. written by professionals, 2. based on CBT techniques that actually work and 3. are not condescending! Plus, there are so many different titles to suit everyone. I'm currently reading Overcoming Depression, Overcoming Low Self-Esteem and Overcoming Shyness and Social Anxiety but there are other books in series such as overcoming perfectionism, eating disorders, etc.
Well worth a look!

For Phobias, anxiety and chronic worry, The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmound Bourne, a very good CBT book, I found it helped stop my negative thoughts and worry and also helped stop me being self critical. I suffered from a racing mind and perfectionist thinking. This book put me straight and I made good progress by completing the exercises.
For agoraphobia and panic attacks, Self Help For Your Nerves by DR Claire Weekes, I was able to start leaving the house after four years with the help of this book.
