Question number 1 - Who else out there who suffers with anxiety has safety behaviour? Safety behaviour can be what you don't leave the house without as such, like I take ginger, mints & chewing gum. Safety behaviour can also be something physical you do according to my therapist.
Question number 2 - Have you tried not to use your safety behaviour & seen what happens?
My reason for creating this post is because recently I have been leaving the house with the gingers, mints & chewing gum just incase I need them but don't use them. For example I put them in my mums bag so I know they are there if I absolutely need them. The other day I did a supermarket shop with my mum without taking any of them & managed better than I would if I took them, sounds crazy & not sure how it works..
Has anyone else found this too?

Hi Anna, I think safety behaviors are VERY common in anxiety disorders! In answer to question 1 - I have anxiety and also Emetophobia, so I also take a very specific hand sanitiser, gum, anti emetics and Immodium instants. I've gotten worse in some ways because I used to take a variety of herbal remedies which I think (personally) are a bit better. I used to carry ginger & peppermint along with my hand sanitiser. But now I feel I HAVE to have my anti emetics. Question 2 answer - I have, but (and I know this sounds very strange) but I tend to keep this to myself. The reason for this is because I have it in my head is if I share my successes, I'll "jinx" it, and I'll get ill or something after all. Anxiety works in weird ways sometimes! It's fantastic you left the house without them - have you been doing a certain therapy like CBT to help with this? That might be why you feel confident in doing so! If so great work!! xx

I have safety things, but they are more like I have to of thought through the situations and a,l their possible outcomes, know where I'm going and why and with who and whati need to take. If I don't then I find it very hard to go. And also I always have to have scissors, tissues, a carrier bag, and my phone with me, for "emergencies". I guess another behaviour is things like I won't go in if I can't get out at the drop of a hat. I manage trains because I can get out to another carriage. Don't know if that's the kind of thing you meant? I haven't tried without the behaviours and processes, because at the moment I find it hard to see them as a problem, because I think the problem would come from not having them or doing them. Guess that's just the illness bit! All of this and I still get ridiculous amounts of anxiety anyway! Silly brain!
