I've been really nervous about posting on here, but everyone seems really nice so I thought I'd come and say hi. I'm currently waitning for CBT because I've been dealing with a range of mental health problems for the last 2 years, which I haven't got diagnosed. I tried to tell my GP about my depression before but it wasn't until 12(ish) weeks ago that I went to see him, because I'd been through a really bad patch of feeling out of control, and he asked for a rapid referral for counselling. He also told me once before when I mentioned depression to him that he didn't prescribe anti depressants... does anyone know why? Oh, and I'm off to Uni in September, and I'm excited, but also really worried that I won't get help there and things will get out of hand again. But if things go ok and I get a diagnosis, so I can get support, then hopefully things will be ok

Thanks I'm going to study Biology It should be fun if everything goes ok. And I'm not sure if the CBT is going to happen now. I'm leaving for Uni in 5 weeks and still haven't got an appointment. So perhaps I'll have to go on another waiting list when I move :/ I don't know how to get a diagnosis or assesment or whatever either, because if I have a diagnosis I can tell my Uni and get a bit more support then I've got during A levels. It's all really confusing.

Hi Gwen, In answer to your question; Some doctors don't like their patients going down the medication route as its not always necessary, they usually like you to try CBT, Counselling and other therapies first and use medication as a last resort, as with all medication there are side effects and the first prescription make not be suitable and sometimes it can be a bit of trial and error. After my first breakdown counselling did work for me for a while but it wasn't a long term fix for me. Be open minded about your counselling sessions, try CBT and take it from there...
This is a great place to openly discuss any issues you may have. I hope you enjoy your time here.

Hi, I just finished CBT (only had time for 3 sessions before uni) and I think it's helped. Got diagnosed with social anxiety and depression (or low mood, I'm not sure what we decided, since depression hasn't been much of an issue lately) and decided that the anxiety causes depression. We talked about all the things I was worrying about, which have been mostly uni related, but also fear of being in busy environments and getting in people's way. I had to write down things I was afraid of and try to explain why I was afraid of them and think of things I need to do at uni to get over my anxiety or in spite of it. There were these sheets with boxes I had to fill in as well where I had to think of a situation that caused anxiety, explain what was happening, thoughts that were in my head, my feelings and their intensity at that time, physical sensations and what I did. It was good at identifying things I was afraid of, like crowded areas in shops. I also had to keep an activity diary for a week where I recorded what I did every 2 hours, my mood and the intensity, and on a scale of 1-10 my sense of achievement, closeness to others and enjoyment of each activity. I expect it would have be more useful if I weren't still on my summer holiday when I don't have any sense of routine and spend several hours watching TV (although I did that before anyway), so maybe I could try that again when I've started uni.
Anyway, time to finish this rant. The most useful things I got from CBT were that panick attacks won't kill me, I need to push myself into social situations and stay, even if I'm really anxious and even if I have a panick attack people won't react as badly as I imagine they will. It's really scary, but I want to try pushing myself into situations that could cause anxiety and instead of avoiding them, exposing myself to them. I'm gonna try getting more CBT at uni because I think it'll be important, especially since I am going to so anxious. I'll tell you how that goes. (Also, thank you Paul, that makes a lot of sense)

Hi Gwen, just wanted to say thank you for sharing your story about CBT. A lot of our members have been through this treatment, whilst a lot re also still waiting, so it's always good to hear of experiences. Good luck at uni, hope you're settling in well! :-) x

Hiya! Glad you managed to squeeze in some CBT before Uni Gwen, it should stand you in good stead! You can always go to your uni GP to ask to be referred for more CBT as well, and as far as I'm aware most Uni's have some sort of support service as well. As for antidepressants, some doctors are really quick to hand them out which often isn't a good thing, it's probably better that yours sent you down the therapy route first. Some doctors also don't like prescribing without the word of a MH professional in case something goes wrong in my experience. Take care! x

Hi, sorry I haven't been able to reply. Just moved and haven't got a laptop yet. And hi Kim! Message me if you need anything Uni is ok, met some nice people and even some that I don't feel nervous around, which is quite a relief. Met my tutor as well and explained everything to him, and he seemed pretty understanding, so I think I'll be ok. Going to try to get some more CBT and maybe antidepressants and help from the uni
