I can usually help with and benefits and work questions. I don't know everything but have been through it all - right to the appeal stage .....and won in my application for DLA This opened up a whole new world for me and now I get some useful credits. A really useful website is this one but it costs www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/David

Don't get me started on benefits. They're threatening to sanction my and my bfs' JSA for 4 weeks. I have a baby, all I would be able to afford are his things, nevermind food for me. Stressed isn't the word.

Oh dear, you know benefits are built into law? No Job Centre can threaten you like this. They are a bunch of knuckleheads in my opinion.
Have you tried your local Citizen's Advice Bureau ? Maybe ask Mind for help?
I always appeal and get in front of a Doctor and Judge

Mind have a great legal team who deal with things like this, although their response time can be slow when they're busy. CAB is definitely a good shout, they are the best at appealing and letter writing. Although if you don't want to wait for them then a quick google search will pull up all the legal advice you need, as well as letter templates.
Good luck Laura!

If anyone has a query that relates to Benefits please don't hesitate to send me a message. My mother is a benefits officer and knows the system inside out. She deals with people abusing the system and those who are being treated unfairly BY the system More than happy to help

Our members have got ESA Support Group; DLA some high rate care component; council tax exemption; as well as (not strictly benefits but what the hell) Disability railcards and bus passes and CEA Card (2 for one cinema ticket when you bring a carer (friend)) And I have just helped a couple of members out with PIP. Direct payments are available via your care coordinator too. :-)

Is any of that available in Plymouth? If not it needs to be. I went to Mind once and it was quite disturbing

Available nationally. We, with a severe mental impairment according to the CG38 NICE guideline, are entitled to claim for all the above. I got it all. ?

Has anyone here had DSA? I'm not sure how to explain my condition as it's really affecting me and I've been told to apply for next year to help pay for medication etc

I'm not sure what DSA is Casey? Did you mean DLA? Anyhow, there is a "way" to filling out forms when applying due to a mental illness. The questions which seem to focus more on physical disability have to be adapted for mental disability. I don't know what your illness is but for bipolar you basically answer "When I'm manic.....", "When I'm depressed...." To each question. And for instance, when thee question asks "Are you able to walk up two steps?" There is a "yes" "No" "Varies" "Add comment" The answer would be something like: Tick varies and add the comment: "When I am severely depressed I can't even get out of bed let alone walk up two steps." How an illness affects our lives depends on the individual but you can say specifically that, for instance, ended up with broken relationships; loss of jobs; inability to finish education; debt; lost opportunity in life; side effects; inability to leave the home and such things.
Hope that helps.

Ah yes sorry Casey Disability Student Allowance as in www.yourdsa.com/I'm not familiar with the form or the application process but it will be similar to the examples I wrote above. Supported by a years worth of care plans from your psychiatric consultant and if you have one an assessment report helps greatly. I find Disability Rights UK a good organisation for advice: disabilityrightsuk.org/

So glad this thread was started, thank you. If anyone could help me out I'd really appreciate it! I'm on Employment and Support Allowance but it's not anywhere enough to live on. My depression has been bad recently, so I've found sitting and reading through a ton of stuff really hard to do. I normally love filling in forms (!) but I can't face it right now.

What level of DLA are you on? I can help here sometimes.
One tip is to always fill in the details every little one and appeal if you get rejected, I appealed and it was quite a pleasant experience.
I'm on the lowest but anything is welcome

Thanks David - I think I'm on the lowest at the moment. £56.80 a week? But I haven't been formally assessed yet and I've been told that could make a difference?
I hope it does as feeling pretty bad about not being to contribute to the pot right now.
