Hello!
I'm sophie (except I tend to go by owls, a clever pun surrounding my second name that seems to stuck). I'm 20 and I study applied theatre in London, but I'm currently home for summer in Leeds.
I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety 2 years ago now, but have struggled with the symptoms, mood swings and self-harm since I was 12. I have been in recovery for two years, trying out a variety of methods and I've found a sort of holistic approach where I do a bit of everything most useful, bit disillusioned with the NHS after spending 7 months of a waiting list of therapy for only a 6 session programme to offered to me so I think I'm going to try again when I move back to uni after summer. I have been heavily involved with lots of arts projects that work within mental health as part of my degree, I did an arts residency running workshops at MIND in camden and I'm currently writing my dissertation on "how can theatre challenge silence and stigma within mental health". I thought i'd join here for the support and the community because I think community is probably the best way to recovery! Especially inspired by all the BBC3 shows I've been watching.

Hello Sophie/Owls I'm pretty disillusioned with my local NHS services after returning from uni where they were absolutely fantastic. Also, I wrote my dissertation about mental health too (1895-1897), but it was based on the role of photography -- let me know if you think it could be any use and I can send it to you xx

It's so weird how the different services up and down the country vary, and how they don't seem in my experience to be very understanding of the fact students sometimes live in different cities for half the year! and really? That would be wonderful, I'm trying to do much research as I can because I sort of want to go into drama/arts therapy some day so that would be useful. And thank you Keeley it's nice to hear supportive tones somewhere in the world! Sophie xx
