This might just be a myth, but I once read somewhere that you can only be diagnosed with a personality disorder if you're over 18. Is that true? And if so, why?

To be honest it's not something I've heard. Best person to ask would be your g.p or mental belting professional. There is information on the web. But not all information in these areas we reliable. Hope this helps x

Thanks. It's something I've been wondering for a while, and I've been meaning to bring it up but for whatever reason I never did.

It is true, in most cases. It's because the personality is still forming in adolescence. The criteria for BPD, for example, can pretty easily be fulfilled as a teenager even if you don't have it, due to mood swings, hormones and still figuring out identity. Hope that's helpful

Yeah, I've had experience of that. Although some doctors will diagnose whilst your under 18, if the symptoms are over a Number of years and not therefore because of hormones, I know someone who was diagnosed with it whilst with CAMHS. But the first psychiatrist I saw said she couldn't diagnose it until I was 25, which also meant I couldn't have specific therapy until then either, luckily my care co-ordinator got me discharged from that ward, and I have since seen a psychiatrist, been diagnosed with BPD amongst other things, and am getting support, and will later get therapy when im more stable.
