Ok it's November tomorrow!! Which means a brand new film!! Now I've been a bit cheeky this month, I haven't picked one out of the hat, BUT a LOT of people have requested this film, so I thought I'd go with the majority. SIDE EFFECTS You can watch it online here www.novamov.com/video/e7ef15df8e3af and we will have a chin wag about it in two weeks time! Or before if you like..... but if you want the full two weeks then stay away from this board for spoilers!! ALSO - for December, I thought we'd have a break from MH films, as they can get a bit intense. SO, I thought I'd get a little poll going for some christmas films, and we can vote for the festive film of the month! Happy watching people!

Ok, at the risk of sounding really stupid... I'm not sure I actually got it! I stopped paying attention for about 5 minutes to reply to a text, and from then on I was totally confused! Perhaps need to watch it again lol. Kim I'd love to get your thoughts! I liked it though! I think I'd enjoy watching it again. Jude Law was actually pretty good in it, and I'm not usually a fan of his. And it was good to see Channing Tatum in a role which didn't involve just being a heart throb. I thought it might turn into a really good film on relationships and mental health... but then he died haha.
A couple of things I did like: I thought the role of medication and how it works was pretty well explained. In this instance the whole story is based around medication, so it would pretty poor if it wasnt - but aside from the fictional drug, SSRI's and other meds were talked about realistically.
After the story hits the papers and the backlash starts being felt by the doctor, I like how his other patients were expressing concern around their treatment and being associated with him. It really highlighted how one story in the media can produce stigma for everyone concerned, despite being one case out of thousands and not the norm.
I know Emily's actual care isn't very true to life, but wouldn't we all love a doctor who shows as much interest and spends as much time on a patient as Dr. Banks!! lol! One quote from the really film really stuck in my mind; when he is talking about medication to his wife and he says: "It doesn't make you something you're not, it just makes it easier to be who you are". I found this really interesting! Do people agree with this? Sometimes I feel like medication has taken away vital parts of my personality... I used to be funny, I used to be the life and soul and would always have something to say. That part of me isn't really around anymore - maybe it was never me, maybe it was part of my disorder.. but I liked it! And sometimes I struggle that it's not there anymore. However on the other hand, medication does make my life a hell of a lot easier, and I function day to day a lot better... it comes down to who are you anyway, do you disorder and pills hinder or enrich your existence? Really got me thinking!
I know I've rambled, but I really hope someone replies to this! Most of these boards are me having a conversation with myself! lol

Loved the film although some really unexpected twists happened when I thought i had figured it out! I think the film is very relevant with the times, with anti-depressants being, in my opinion, prescribed willy-nilly and being a 'blockbuster' I think it really hit home for a lot of people due to the subject. For the film industry alone, this topic is usually handled independently, so I am quite pleased that the word is coming out, whether some parts are negative or positive. If a film really gets people talking, someone has done their job right! I feel I do need to watch again due to quite complicated subtext, and to get to grips with the little details as I'm finding it difficult to remember specifics! Good choice Mia

Absolutely! So good to see the subject being tackled on such a huge platform with a star studded cast. And over all I think it was handled really really well. If you want to get really picky I suppose you could say the fact Emily is making it all up might add to the stigma, but if you did, you'd be totally missing the point of what the film is dealing with! I can't wait to watch it again!
